Girls’ and Boys’ Swimming Have Phenomenal Showing at Super Essex Conference/Essex County Championships

Newark Academy girls’ swimming took home the gold, while the boys took bronze at the SEC/ECT meet on Monday, January 20 at the New Jersey Aquatic Center in New Providence. These impressive performances featured multiple first-place finishes and three new school records.

Finishing first in the 100 Fly, with a time of 57.36, Kim Tran ’27 broke the standing school record set previously by Laura Kim ’25 in 2023. Tran had numerous top finishes which helped her earn the 2025 Cullen Jones Award honoring the most valuable swimmer of the meet. The girls’ 400 Free Relay of Kim, Amy Jiang ’27, Phoebe Kaplan ’25 and Katiana Matlosz ’28, also placed first while breaking the standing school record with a time of 3:39.90. The 200 Medley team, made up of Tran, Kim, Matlosz, and Claire Wong ’25 who recently broke the standing Newark Academy pool record, also finished first at the meet. Additional first-place finishes include Jiang in the 200 Free, Matlosz in the 50 Free, Kim in the 100 Free, Tran in the 100 Breast and the 200 Free Relay of Tran, Wong,  Jiang and Lauren Markowitz ’28. Tran also broke the 50 Free standing school record leading off this relay with a time of 24.74.

To support their first-place finishes, the girls also had numerous swimmers come in in the second-place spot. The team’s runner-up results included Wong in the 50 Free, Jiang in the 100 Free and Matlosz in the 100 Back.

On the boys’ side, the Minutemen also had a strong day in the pool, finishing in third overall. Brett Matlosz ’25 finished first in the 100 Free and second in the 50 Free. The 200 Free Relay of Alejandro Rodriguez ’25, Ted Crall ’25, Nathan Hsu ’28 and Matlosz finished in second.

This is the girls’ first SEC and ECT win since 2019. They have their sights set on three-peating their Prep Championship title, while the boys hope to four-peat their Prep Championship title.

Both teams return to regular season competition this week, hosting MKA on Thursday, January 23 at 4 p.m. for senior night.
