Wrestling Secures Super Essex Conference Independence Division

The Newark Academy wrestling team took down East Orange 47-30 on Friday, January 31 to secure the Super Essex Conference (SEC) Independence division. The team was also celebrating senior night and held the match in the Kirby Gymnasium to accommodate a larger crowd and the senior festivities.

The match started with a few Newark Academy forfeits due to the lack of wrestlers in those weight classes. That did not leave the Minutemen in a state of defeat, as they came out strong with multiple pins. Alex Marmara ’26 kicked things off for the Minutemen with a pin at 132. Jack Sullivan ’25 (138), Jackson Flores ’26 (150), Joe Murray ’27 (175), Alexander Balsera ’25 (190) and Cole Zienowicz ’27 (215) all secured wins by pin. Trevor Brown ’26 (157) lost by a pin. Michael Cetrulo ’25 (144) won by Tech Fall and Sebastian Eaton ’27 (165) won by a forfeit.

This win helped the Minutemen secure the SEC Independence division title, the team’s first since 2022. Newark Academy is back in action next Friday, February 7 when they host Dwight Morrow and Saddle Brook at home at 5 pm.
